가을을 알리는 이 지독한 사랑(Terrible love)

 

 

 

한층 차가워진 바람이 가을을 알린다. 아직 긴팔을 꺼내 입기엔 한낮 햇살이 따사롭긴 하지만 아침 저녁으로 문득 옆구리가 서늘해진다. 그래서인지 복잡미묘한 감정들이 안개처럼 피어오르고 조금은 구질구질한 옛 사랑의 추억들이 밤을 괴롭힌다.

 

마음이 어지러울 때면 생각나는 노래, 내셔널(The National)의 'Terrible Love'. 장르는 인디라고 알려져 있지만 내셔널은 비주류와 주류를 넘나들며 음악적 색깔을 다져나가고 있는 밴드다. 특히 묵직하고도 나른한 음색으로 읊조리는 "어둡고 멜랑콜리하며 해석하기 어려운(dark, melancholy and difficult to interpret)" 노래가사는 가슴을 울리는 어둠과 슬픔으로 가득 차 있다. 노래를 듣고 있노라면 조이 디비전(Joy Division)이나 아케이드 파이어(Arcade Fire)가 떠오르기도.

 

작년 발매한 앨범 <Trouble Will Find Me>는 롤링스톤즈가 선정한 올해의 앨범에 꼽힐 정도로 큰 인기를 얻었는데 개인적으로는 'Terrible Love'가 실린 <High Violet>가 더 마음에 든다. 실제로 이 앨범은 "뉴요커들의 최고의 작품, 올해 가장 주목해야 할 앨범!" (BBC), "The National 에게 진지하고 의미 있는 록밴드 라는 사명을 안겨준 사운드" (Pitchfork), "보석 같은 음반"(Q) 등 평단의 전폭적인 지지와 사랑을 받은 바 있다.

 

Terrible Love는 한때 천재소녀라는 수식어가 따라붙던 버디(Birdy)가 리메이크하기도 했는데 내셔널의 오리지널 버전과는 또다른 매력이 있다.
